PROBLEM BEING ADDRESSED:
THERE ARE SHORTCOMINGS OF THE MORE TRADITIONAL PHYSICAL TOOLS IN THE AUDIOLOGIST’S “TOOL BOX,” INCLUDING PRINTED DRAWINGS AND PLASTIC OBJECTS, SUCH AS COOKIES, WHICH HAVE BEEN USED FOR AUDIOLOGIC TESTING FOR DECADES. THESE TRADITIONAL TOOLS CAN BE A CHALLENGE TO CLEAN FOR INFECTION CONTROL, SOMETIMES REQUIRE TWO AUDIOLOGISTS FOR THEIR USE, AND SOMETIMES HAVE CULTURALLY OUTDATED IMAGERY. IN ADDITION, THESE TOOLS ARE GENERALLY STATIC, TWO-DIMENSIONAL, AND SOMETIMES MONOCHROME; BEING GENERALLY LESS DYNAMIC, INTERACTIVE AND ATTRACTIVE AS COMPARED TO MODERN MOBILE APPS.
SOLUTION DEVELOPED:
DR. SHERRY RALSTON RECOGNIZED THE POTENTIAL OF MOBILE APPS IN ADDRESSING THE SHORTCOMINGS OF THESE MORE TRADITIONAL TOOLS AND INITIATED A PROGRAM OF RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT. DR. RALSTON COLLABORATED WITH THE CHILDREN’S MERCY CENTER FOR PEDIATRIC INNOVATION AND APP DEVELOPERS TO BUILD HEARPLAY™. HEARPLAY IS AN IOS-BASED SUITE OF FUN AND ENGAGING GAMES THAT SUPPORT CONDITIONED PLAY AUDIOMETRY (CPA) FOR MEASURING SPEECH RECEPTION THRESHOLDS, AND PURE TONE THRESHOLDS, WITH CHILDREN, ON AVERAGE, FROM 2 1/2 TO 5 YEARS OF AGE AND THOSE WITH DEVELOPMENTAL DELAYS.

Children’s Hospital Los Angeles
PROBLEM BEING ADDRESSED:
RECRUITING STUDY PARTICIPANTS HAS LONG BEEN ONE OF THE TOUGHEST CHALLENGES FOR CLINICAL RESEARCHERS. IT IS ALL TOO COMMON FOR MEMBERS OF THE PUBLIC TO BE RELUCTANT TO TAKE PART IN STUDIES—WHETHER IT’S DUE TO LACK OF KNOWLEDGE ABOUT THE BASICS OF RESEARCH, CONCERNS ABOUT SAFETY OR PRIVACY, OR OTHER ISSUES. THIS IS ESPECIALLY TRUE FOR RACIAL/ETHNIC POPULATIONS, AS WELL AS PEDIATRIC POPULATIONS, WHO REMAIN UNDER-REPRESENTED IN LIFE SAVING CLINICAL TRIALS RESEARCH.
SOLUTION DEVELOPED:
IN RESPONSE, WE DEVELOPED ZIPPY, AN ANIMATED ROBOT CHARACTER THAT CHILDREN AND ADULTS CAN CONVERSE WITH—CURRENTLY, VIA A MICROSOFT SURFACE TABLET COMPUTER—TO LEARN ABOUT CLINICAL RESEARCH, AND BETTER UNDERSTAND WHAT IT MEANS TO BE INVOLVED IN A RESEARCH STUDY. IN EFFECT, ZIPPY IS DESIGNED TO TAKE PEOPLE ON A JOURNEY THROUGH THE RESEARCH PROCESS, AND IDEALLY, ALL THE WAY TO ENROLLING THEM IN AN ACTUAL STUDY. USERS CAN ASK QUESTIONS ABOUT DIFFERENT ASPECTS OF THE CLINICAL RESEARCH PROCESS, AND ZIPPY CAN ANSWER VERBALLY, USING EVERYDAY TERMINOLOGY THAT KIDS AND LAYPEOPLE CAN UNDERSTAND.

CHLA
PROBLEM BEING ADDRESSED:
Families of high-risk infants often manage medical and developmental needs above and beyond what is required for a healthy full-term infant, for months or even years after neonatal discharge. For example, parents must transport their child to therapies such as early intervention programs, communicate with the child’s pediatrician and other healthcare providers, and are often responsible for daily tasks such as administering medications. Families with high-risk infants face multiple difficulties in meeting their child’s health needs after discharge.
SOLUTION DEVELOPED:
We developed an mHealth application called “Baby Steps LA” that serves as a VTP. Baby Steps LA (available in English and Spanish for Android and IOS users) was informed by focus groups with families and neonatal providers. It provides medical information, resources, task lists, and a “wellness” page that has resources for families and an option to build a profile and participate in a moderated online support group.
